Matt Damon has graced the silver screen for more than 25 years. Damon is also an accomplished screenwriter, having won a 1998 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay to “Good Will Hunting,” Damon’s breakout film that starred him alongside his lifelong friend and co-star Ben Affleck. Often compared to Paul Newman and Tom Hanks for their incredible acting versatility, Matt Damon has starred in best-selling blockbusters like the “Bourne Identity” series and emotionally charging war films like “Saving Private Ryan.”

1. Goodwill Hunting (1997)

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck star in Goodwill Hunting alongside the late Robin Williams and Minnie Driver. Damon stars as Will Hunting, a personally troubled young man who is a math genius. Will makes ends meet as a janitor at M.I.T. Determined to help Will free himself of his personal demons; Robin Williams goes through the emotional highs and lows as his therapist.

Goodwill Hunting received several Academy Award nominations for its gritty and emotional portrayals of strained friendships, overcoming fear to enjoy personal relationships and overall human growth.

2. Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Fresh off his success from Goodwill Hunting, Matt Damon stars as Private Ryan, a gripping and bloody World War 2 film directed and produced by Steven Spielberg. Tom Hanks stars as Captain Hanks, who leads a squad to rescue and bring home Private Francis Ryan, who is a P.O.W. Saving Private Ryan draws criticism and attention for its excessive blood and violent scenes. However, it received tremendous praise for depicting human sacrifice and raw emotion.

3. Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

The remake of the iconic 1960s film of the same title with, Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack features Matt Damon with other A-list actors like George Clooney and the the late Bernie Mac. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, Damon stars as Linus Caldwell. Caldwell joins Danny Ocean and the gang, who plot to rob three of the biggest casinos in the world at the same time.

4. The Bourne Identity (2002)

The first Bourne Identity movie made Matt Damon an American superstar and a global icon. In the first of four Bourne Identity movies, Damon stars as Jason Bourne, an exceptionally trained government assassin with no memory of his real life or purpose.

As the U.S. government sends agents and assets to locate and kill Bourne, moviegoers are introduced to and thrilled with the hard-hitting action scenes. With each incredible physical feat, Bourne gets one step closer to remembering his true identity. The Bourne Identity now not only affirms Matt Damon as an International megastar but also produced three other high-grossing sequels.

5. The Departed (2006)

Legendary director Martin Scorsese directs an epic mob drama starring Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Jack Nicholson. Damon takes on the role of Colin Sullivan, a young officer and dirty cop who collects insider police information for the Irish mob boss from Boston, Frank Costello, starring Jack Nicholson.

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Billy Costigan, an ambitious young cop who goes undercover to help take Frank Costello and his gang. As the film progresses, Costigan and Sullivan cross paths and discover each other’s true intentions as the film goes on. The Departed received critical acclaim for the numerous plot twists and a wild and climatic ending.

6. True Grit (2010)

The Cohen Brothers direct the iconic 1969 remake starring the immortal John Wayne. In the 2010 version, Matt Damon stars as LaBoeuf, a Texas Ranger, who partners up with the young Mattie Ross and Rooster Cogburn, a rough gun-for-hire.

As the gang looks to settle the score and get revenge for Mattie Ross, tremendous friendships blossom, Damon adds much comedic relief. Beyond the jokes, we learn why LaBoeuf is eager to join the gang and take down Chaney, a notorious bandit, causing chaos throughout the surrounding towns. The True Grit remake became a box office success and cemented Matt Damon again as one of this generation’s most versatile and captivating actors.

7. Oppenheimer (2023)

Oppenheimer broke several box office records for taking moviegoers behind the scenes of The Manhattan Project and how the Americans built the atomic bomb to turn the tide of World War 2. Matt Damon stars as Lieutenant General Leslie Groves, whose mission is to guard Dr. Oppenheimer, his team, and their families as they compete against Hitler and the S.S. forces to develop the first atomic bomb.

Besides learning about how Oppenheimer pulled off the atomic bomb, the film explores dark and private aspects of his life, including his tumultuous affair. Even in the aftermath, Oppenheimer exposes the fallout of dropping the two atom bombs in Japan and Oppenheimer’s conflicted feelings over his life’s greatest achievement.

Since his breakout role in Goodwill Hunting to his explosive action scenes in the Bourne series, Matt Damon has showed his range of his acting talents. High in demand, Matt Damon’s upcoming projects include “The Instigators” and “The King of Oil.”
