About Women Premier League
The Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) introduced the launch of the Women’s Indian Premier League shortly known as WPL in 2023 at the 91st Annual General Meeting held in Mumbai. It is an upcoming women’s Twenty20 Cricket franchise league in India. It is owned and operated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. It is more or less like the famous twenty20 league of India known as IPL.
The first edition of this league is scheduled for March 2023 in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, where five teams will compete with each other to achieve the title of champions.
BCCI also approved the Senior Women’s Future Tour Programs for 2022-2025 in this event, where BCCI secretary Jay Shah, Vice President Rajiv Shukla, Treasurer Arun Singh Dhumal, and former Indian Cricket team captain Sourav Ganguli were present.
The women’s T20 Challenge is the first ever major women’s single-match Twenty20 tournament in India which was held in 2018. This Women’s Twenty20 tournament was expanded to a three-team, three-match tournament and played in 2019, 2020, and 2022.
In February 2022, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly planned to replace the Women’s T20 challenge with the Women’s version of the Indian Premier League, which is the major Twenty20 tournament in India. However, the plans got more advanced in August and in the month of October BCCI introduced with the Cricket fans a five-team tournament which will be going to take place in March of 2023. Initially, this league is known as the Women’s Indian Premier League, but on 25th of January 2023, BCCI officially changed the name to the Women’s Premier League.
On the 28th of January 2023, BCCI deal with TATA for the league’s title sponsorship, and TATA got the league’s title sponsorship rights until 2027.
